2025 BGC-KY ESPORTS League

After postponing our first few meets due to inclement weather, we finally had our first match up for our 2025 BGC-KY ESPORTS league! Our team, Cliff Hagan Hawks, is comprised of teen Club members from each of our different Club sites including Butler County, Ohio County, Henderson and Owensboro. The Cliff Hagan Hawks were honored to host 6 Kentucky Boys & Girls Clubs at our newly renovated Boys & Girls Club of Henderson- Fidler Family Unit. Among our CHBGC organization some of the other Clubs in attendance were the Boys & Girls Club of Franklin Simpson, Boys & Girls Clubs of Hopkinsville-Christian County, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Bowling Green Are, and the Bastogne Teen Center Group. Together we had over 53 attendees to our first match up!

Youth competed in 6 different games such as Madden, NBA 2K, Mario Kart, Smash bros, and Fortnite. This year we are slowly introducing a new game, Marvel Rivals. This League is very competitive, and our teens have battled against their peers to prove they are the best! Congrats to all who walked away with their First-Place belts! In this league, the first-place winners receive a belt for that particular game and get to take it back with them to their Club to display until the next Esports match-up. There were some amazing giveaways for a lucky few and swag bags for all youth that participated. For the next round we will travel to Boys & Girls Club of Glasgow-Barren County next month!

What is ESPORTS?

ESports is short for electronic sports and refers to the world of competitive video gaming. Players participate as individuals or as part of a team in organized competitions focused on a single game. Any competitive multiplayer video game can qualify as an ESport, but there are
some games that already have established leagues and tournaments. Competitions can take the form of massive online tournaments that span states and regions or can be smaller and within a single Club organization as one-versus-one matches. Participation in ESports helps
youth and teens develop fine motor skills, strategic planning, social-emotional skills, and teamwork. It also exposes youth to career opportunities and scholarships that exist within the video game industry.

Why ESports at BGC?

Gone are the days where video games were just a kid sitting alone in a darkened room with just a TV and a controller. Today, ESports are collaborative, engaging, exciting, and most importantly- safe. Your Club can take advantage of this and offer youth a better experience than simply playing at home in multiple ways. First, you can offer safety and supervision while youth are engaging online. This includes monitoring in-game voice and text chats, vetting out those who youth will be playing with online, establishing safety procedures surrounding online access, and providing physical safety in a gaming area. This gives parents and guardians peace of mind while allowing youth to explore their interests.

Second, you can provide a safe place to practice teamwork and cooperation skills, as well as find encouragement in building in-game skills. Studies have shown that playing competitive video games can improve fine motor skills, reaction time, communication, cooperation, and teamwork. These skills can translate into real-world academic and career success over a youth’s lifetime.

Third, you can give youth a chance to be part of a team and represent their Club in competitions. As you know, a sense of belonging is a key part to achieving high-quality outcomes for youth. Being part of your Esports program can provide that for youth who don’t quite “fit in” to other programs. As your program develops to include competitions, youth can learn how to act with good citizenship and responsibility while representing their Club.
