Our 41st Annual Steak & Burger Dinner guest speaker is Mr. Randy Embry: one of “Our Hometown Heroes”, KY Mr. Basketball, KY Hall of Fame Coach, and legendary NBA Scout for the Miami HEAT!
On the Court: Randy Embry, a hometown native, attended Owensboro High School where he was a star baseball and basketball player. He was chosen to the basketball All-State Teams his junior and senior year in 1960 and 1961. He would be crowned Mr. Basketball in 1961 his final year for the Red Devils. After graduation, Embry would play 4 seasons for the University of Kentucky on both their basketball and baseball teams (1961-1965). In his basketball career, he played under the legendary head coach Adolph Rupp and one of his teammates was Pat Riley (later to be the HEAT president). He was named captain of the team during his senior year and All-SEC on the baseball field.
Off the Court: After graduation, Embry would join the coaching staff at Daviess County High School from 1967-1980. He helped lead them to a KY State Championship in 1971. Then in 1980 he would transfer to his alma mater as the head basketball coach for Owensboro High School and teacher until 1999. Here he would go to win 445 games, lead his teams to 3x Final Four appearances in the KY State Basketball tournament, and 8 regional titles. Embry joined the HEAT in 1999 as a regional scout. His duties included evaluating prospective players who were competing in other professional sports leagues, colleges and AAU tournaments in the eastern and southern region of the U.S. During his tenure in Miami, the franchise has won 3 NBA championships so far. (2006, 2012, 2013) In his personal life, Randy and his wife, Luann, have 3 children and several grandchildren that they love and enjoy.
